Discovery Day (Chaperone-guided)

A Chaperone-guided field trip with a hands-on twist. A field trip to SciTech is appropriate for any age group.

Come explore our 200+ interactive science exhibits and learn about science!

When you choose the Discovery Day Field Trip, your group will enjoy:

  • Over 200 interactive exhibits
  • Gift Shop
  • Complimentary Floor Show during your visit!
  • Trained museum staff to help you get the most from your visit.
  • Complimentary use of lunchroom (please request when booking your trip).
  • $8 per student for groups under 20. $7 per student for groups over 20.
  • One free adult for every 6 students. Teachers are included in this ratio of free adults.
  • Additional adults are welcome at group rate price.

 

Discovery Demos

Add an exciting 30-minute science presentation to your field trip. Choose from: Discovering Dinosaurs, Awesome Weather, Electricity and Magnets, What's the Matter with Chemistry.

FEE: $50.00 for 1 to 49 people.  $40 Second Demo for groups of 51 to 100 people max.   Shows are limited to a maximum of 50 people.

 

Discovery Labs

This includes our Discovery Demo followed by a 30-minute hands-on laboratory session, and time to explore our 200 interactive science exhibits.

Groups of fewer than 20 students: $180 to $220 flat fee with 3 free adults and/or teachers. Additional adults and/or teachers are welcome for $9 each.

Groups over 20 students*: $9 to $11 each depending on the class selected with one free adult for every 6 students. Teachers are included in this ratio of free adults. Additional adults are welcome for $9 each.

*Please note that the classroom can accommodate 25 students per session. Larger groups will require more than one session.

Boxed lunches now available! Make it easy and fun for all. Subway boxed lunches include a 6" sub with chips, a cookie and bottled water for only $5.00  Be sure to let us know how many to include with your group.

Discovering Dinosaurs 

Students learn about what a dinosaur is and how to classify them – from the mighty meat eaters to the humble herbivores. Students learn about where dinosaurs fall on the long time line of the earth in relation to humans as well as how fossils are formed. Students will engage with the presentation through hands on experiences with dinosaur fossils and artifacts.

Electricity and Magnets 
Explore the interconnected relationship between electricity and magnets. See how we can create lightning with a Tesla coil. Learn about Lenz's Law, conductivity and static and current electricity through experiments such as our famous electric pickle or the Van De Graff generator.

Science of Sound 
Investigate scientific principles like pitch, amplitude, and frequency and how they affect sound. Understand how the human ear works and how to protect our sense of hearing. Discover the answer to the big question if sound travels better in a solid liquid or gas through 9 hands on stations.

Awesome Weather 
See how air, water, earth and sun interact to produce our weather. Discovery Labs will participate in 3 hands on stations related to Bernoulli's Principle and static electricity.

What's the Matter with Chemistry 

This is an explosive and chemically reactive experience where students will learn about different types of reactions including combustion, exothermic and endothermic. Students will learn about polymers and one lucky student will take home the polymer muffin. States of matter and the difference between acids and bases will also be explored. For Discovery Labs we will add a hands on experience where the students will classify mysterious household substances.

Insects 

What is an insect? Students will discuss the differences between insects and arachnids. A brief introduction of how scientists communicate through scientific naming will be covered with older students. Students will create their own compound eye to take home and will also get to explore the external anatomy of real preserved grasshoppers.

Designed to Fly

Please note that to ensure a great learning experience the class is strictly limited to 20 students per class

Based on lessons from NASA and the Children's Museum of Indianapolis, this class introduces students to the science of flight.   They will learn that air is matter, how to preform a fair drop test, how to make Leonardo da Vinci's parachute and create a design to test in the vertical wind tunnel.   Students will get to take their designs home.

Grasshopper Dissection

Please note that this class is 1 1/2 hours and to ensure a great learning experience the class is limited to 20 students per class.

Students will compare and contrast class insect and arachnids. Students will learn about scientific naming and classification.  Students will dissect preserved grasshoppers in small groups. (Requires advanced notice to order grasshoppers.)

Fantastic Flight: 

Please note that this class is 1 1/2 hours and to ensure a great learning experience the class is limited to 20 students per class. Straight from NASA to your students! Learn about how things fly, NASA's new mission to space and the principles of flight.   Build stomp rockets, gliders, and test out flight designs in our brand new vertical wind tunnel.   Students will get to take their designs home!

How to Register

Outdoor Science Park will be open June 1st through September 1st!  Weather Permitting ( The park is closed during storms for safety.)

  A non-refundable payment of 50% is due at least 3 weeks prior to secure your field trip. The remaining balance may be paid prior to or on the day of the field trip.  

 We require either a 50% non-refundable deposit or a credit card to reserve the requested date.  If the field trip is cancelled or we do not receive the deposit  3 weeks before the field trip date, the credit card will be charged a $50 cancellation fee.  

 Field trips are available Tuesday through Friday, during Museum hours 10 am to 3 pm. Reservations are requested at least 3-4 weeks in advance.

 Additional students and/or chaperones are welcome and will be charged admission at the time of arrival. To best serve you, please have an accurate count of the attendees.
