Explore and Learn (self-guided)

A self-guided field trip with a hands-on twist. A field trip to SciTech is appropriate for any age group.

Come explore our 200+ interactive science exhibits and learn about science!

When you choose the Explore and Learn Field Trip, your group will enjoy:

  • Over 200 interactive exhibits
  • A unique Outdoor Science Park (May-November; weather permitting)
  • Gift Shop
  • Trained museum staff to help you get the most from your visit
  • Complimentary use of lunchroom (please request when booking your trip)
  • $7 per student for groups under 15. $6 per student for groups over 15.
  • One free adult for every 8 students. Teachers are included in this ratio of free adults.
  • Additional adults are welcome at group rate price.

Science Demos

Add an exciting 30-minute science presentation to your field trip. Choose from: Curious about Chemistry, Fun with Physics, Awesome Weather, Fun with Favorites, Dino Demo. FEE: $80.00 per show. Shows are limited to a maximum of 65 people. Larger groups will require more than one demo.

Focused Field Trips

A 30-minute demonstration followed by a 30-minute hands-on laboratory session, and time to explore our 200 interactive science exhibits.

SciTech incorporates the Illinois Learning Standards (referenced in the table below) in our informal classroom environment.

Discovering Dinosaurs (ILS 1B, 4C, 5A, 5B, 5D, 5F) Learn what a dinosaur is, how they lived and why the non-avian varieties went extinct. Experience the methods paleontologists use to gather, document and interpret dinosaur fossils.

Insects (ILS 11A &13A) What is an insect? Discover the biological structure of insects through construction of an insect body (grades K-2) or dissection of a grasshopper (grades 3-5th). (There is an additional charge for the dissection.) X X X    
Science of Sound (ILS12C, 26A & 26B)
Investigate scientific principles like pitch, amplitude, and frequency and how they affect sound.

Electricity and Magnets (ILS 11B & 12C)
Explore the interconnected relationship between electricity and magnets. Learn about Lenz’s law, conductivity and static and current electricity through experiments such as our famous electric pickle.		   X X X X
What’s the Matter with Chemistry (ILS 11A, 12C & 13A) Here is an opportunity to try experiments that involve chemical and physical changes in the safety of our classroom.   X X X X
Light and Color (ILS 11A & 12C)
Explore light and color through reflection, refraction, diffraction and the electromagnetic spectrum.		       X X

Groups of fewer than 20 students: $160 flat fee with two free adults and/or teachers. Additional adults and/or teachers are welcome for $8 each.

Groups of 20 to 75 students*: $8 each with one free adult for every 8 students. Teachers are included in this ratio of free adults. Additional adults are welcome for $8 each.

*Please note that the classroom can accommodate 25 students per session. Larger groups will require more than one session.

Boxed lunches now available! Make it easy and fun for all. Subway boxed lunches include a 6" sub with chips, a cookie and bottled water for only $5.00  Be sure to let us know how many to include with your group!

Field trips are available Wednesday through Friday between 10 am and 3 pm. Reservations are requested at least 2 weeks in advance. A non-refundable payment of 50% is due upon receipt of the invoice to secure your field trip. Please make arrangements to pay remaining balance prior to your field trip.

Additional students and/or chaperones are welcome and will be charged admission at the time of arrival. To best serve you, please have an accurate count of the attendees.
